If we’re talking about ‘where it all started’ we should probably go all the way back to the year 2000. Big Tom had just secured his first job as the pot wash of a well know speedy pizza chain in Colchester. He climbed the ranks and remained the senior pizza chef for many, many years. Within that time, he met a young waitress named Maxine (me) and we ate our way around the world, satisfying our appetite for exciting food at every available opportunity. Fast forward to September 2018 and a quick decision was made to combine all forces and take over the existing pizza place on Mersea Island. With Big Tom’s long-standing career and my background in marketing, we teamed up with my brother (Little) Tom (a pizza making enthusiast) and opened the doors to Cowabunga Pizza 12 days after picking up the keys.
With pizza going down a storm on the island, we happened on a brainwave… with two young babies to keep us even busier, we knew how hard it was to find good food, service and atmosphere that catered to people with young children. Deep fried kids’ meals, blunt colouring pencils and restless toddlers doesn’t make for a good time. And so… the Cowabunga Kids’ Cafe was born. With a Montessori style play area to keep them entertained, we understand how important it is to let kids play and explore while caretakers enjoy a much-deserved meal.
Operating out of the same space, we are Cowabunga Kids’ Cafe by day and Cowabunga Pizza by night. We aim to provide a welcoming, casual and cool place to dine with (or without) children. We are a true family business and nothing excites us more than welcoming you and yours through our doors.
